A view of the temple at night.
Renown Travel: In the center of Nan town is the Wat Phra That Chang Kham, one of Nan’s oldest and most important temples. This temple dating back to the early 15th century is locally known as the Wat Chang, meaning “Elephant Temple”. Its architectural style is a mix of Lanna and Thai Lü styles. The attractive viharn was rebuilt in 1458. Its front façade is very elegantly decorated with gold motifs on a blue background. Chofah in the form if stylized Naga serpents adorn the ends of the multi tiered roof. The viharn’s entrance is guarded by two white lions. In the interior two rows of large red and black teak columns, support the roof. The principal image is a large Lanna style seated image in the Bhumisparsha mudra named Phra Chao Luang. Flanking the image are two ancient Sukhothai style Buddha images, that were cast in 1426.

The temple is the largest Buddhist temples in the southern hemisphere. It was founded by and constructed under the auspices of the Mahayana Buddhist organization known as Fo Guang Shan, and completed in 1995. The Nan Tien complex is a Chinese-styled palace structure built using modern architectural techniques. Designed by Australian architects, Jones Brewster Regan and built by Australian construction workers. It occupies a semi-rural hillside site several square kilometres in size, and is set amidst landscaped gardens. The temple is one of Wollongong's major tourist attractions, and conducts regular weekend retreats for visitors interested in Buddhism in general, and Chinese culture in particular. Retreats can involve classes in t'ai chi, calligraphy and meditation. 50091
Not the famous Glenfinnan viaduct i'm afraid, this wee one's on the shores of Loch Nan Uamh / Glen Mama, South Morar.
Capturing the train was a real bonus as i just went down to photograph the viaduct !
Mind you, i did hear it coming :)
(J.R.R. Tolkien, Le Silmarillion.)
...also known as the old bridge at Sligachan. As you can see, the height of the central span is not inconsiderable - and no Paul, I've checked, there is no Indianna Jones style invisible bridge stretching across from the new bridge to the old one.
I can however see how one would be completely taken in with the spectacular view across the river to the iconic three Munros of Sgurr nan Gillean, Am Basteir and Bruach na Frith.
God, I love this place!

Macro Monday's and the theme "Made of Metal".
Even though I spent some of the week considering my subject for this Monday I ended up leaving it a bit late again and only chose my subject earlier this morning.
This is a metal whistle which one of my sons took home from his Nan's house and we have to return it soon. I decided to make use of it and placed it on three coloured sheets of paper, the idea that being metal it should reflect some of the colour around it.
Andy Scott's beautiful mermaid and guardian overlooking the M80 motorway at Cumbernauld close to Glasgow.
Arria has the form of a female figure, with two large swooping arcs from the upraised palms of her hands to the hem of her dress. The idea of the arcs comes from the Gaelic name for Cumbernauld, “comar nan allt”, which translates as “the meeting of the waters”.
her name comes from the mother, Arria Fadilla, of Roman emperor Antoninus who was responsible for building the nearby Antonine Wall across Scotland so has historical connections with the area.
Andy Scott is a celebrated Scottish artist also known for amazing artworks such as The Kelpies at the Helix, Heavy Horse on the M8 motorway, Rise in Glasgow and Lomondgate Stag.

We made a visit to the Nan Tien Temple's lotus pond.
There were lots of interesting things to see including a duck with seven ducklings, lotus flowers and a white faced heron.
There was a very strange light. There were no clouds but the sunlight was being filtered by smoke particles in atmosphere giving everything an orange glow.

Wikipedia: The city of Nan's most famous wat is renowned for its cruciform ubosot which was constructed in 1596 and restored during the reign of Phra Chao Anantaworritthidet (Chao Nakhon Nan No.62nd) (1852-1892).
It is the only temple which was built as if it were on the back of two immense snakes (or Nagas). Each of the four entrances is preceded by a small corridor topped by a finely decorated, point-shaped structure (underlining the royal origin of the temple) and is equipped with smoothly carved doors; with Chinese demon guards in the east, flowers in the north and forest life motives in the Lanna style in the west and south.
The wat's interior is impressive. It is also a good example of Thai Lue architecture. The structure of the roof is supported by twelve teak pillars decorated with gold on black and red lacquer and elephants' motives. The ceiling is also finely decorated. The flowered altar resting in the center of the bôt supports four Buddhas of the Sukhothai style in the pose of Bhūmisparsa mudrā
Well preserved murals of great value illustrating the Khattana Kumara Jataka on the Northern wall and the Nimi Jatakas on the Western wall as well as scenes of the local life of the time when they were painted by Thai Lue artists during the restoration of the temple at the end of the 19th century. Europeans can even be noticed: a reference to the arrival of the French to whom the East of the Nan valley area was yielded in 1893. The style is rather distinctive and quite removed from the traditional style of temple paintings in Thailand.

Located in the north of Thailand and near the border of Laos, the rice terraces in Nan province are a breathtaking landscape that enchants visitors. These terraces are one of Thailand's best-kept secrets, boasting an untouched beauty that is often overlooked by tourists. The Nan Rice Terraces are known for their spectacular views, with tiered fields stretching over rolling hills and mountains. They are carefully laid out by the local farmers, who have mastered this technique of terrace construction for centuries. The terraces follow the natural contours of the landscape and make optimal use of the available water resources, resulting in an efficient and sustainable agricultural system. During the rainy season, the terraces are filled with water, creating a beautiful reflection of the surrounding green hills and the clear blue of the sky. As the rice season progresses, the landscape transforms into a golden sea of paddy fields stretching as far as the eye can see. The rice terraces are often surrounded by traditional villages, where the inhabitants maintain their age-old traditions and crafts. You can meet the locals, experience their hospitality and learn more about their farming practices.

A drone photo from above the Cuillin ridge from my Skye trip in November, on a perfect winter day. I must admit one of my best ever memories was doing the ridge in summer, , and even though I've done a few sections in winter under snow and ice, I don't think I'c be up to doing the whole ridge in such conditions. My favourite stretch in winter was a day on Pinnacle ridge on Sgurr Nan Gillean which is the prominent mountain in this view. The cloud inversion made it so special. Coats of Ice is by Damien Jurado. I need to head north again soon if there's a chance of snow.

The local people call this tree ต้นผึ้งยักษ์, Giant Bee Tree or Giant Tree. There are several bee nests in the tree. With a height of up to 40 meters and several hundred years old, this tree belongs to the Moraceae family. The Ficus albipila is a rainforest tree, a type of fig tree native to Thailand and Southeast Asia. Ficus albipila is commonly known as the "Elephant Ear Fig" or "White Fruited Fig." This species is characterized by its large, heart-shaped leaves, which resemble elephant ears, and its white fruits. The leaves have striking veins and the fruits turn from green to white when ripe. Ficus albipila is a strangler fig, meaning it often begins life on other trees and eventually encircles and strangles its host tree as it develops. Ficus albipila is well adapted to tropical climates. It plays an important ecological role as a food source for various animals, including birds and mammals, that feed on its fruits. The tree's dense foliage also provides habitat and shelter for wildlife. The Gaint Bee tree is located on the Wa River in Wiang Sa District, Nan Province. Since lock down, everything seems to be more natural, wilder and more beautiful. The banks and verges along the side of the road are full of wild flowers and there's colour, along with gorgeous aromas all over the place. Let's hope it stays this way for good as not only is it good for us, it's extremely good for nature. My lovely nan, who was very superstitious used to call Cow Parsley "Break your mother's heart" for some reason and she'd never allow it in the house if we were to pick a bouquet. I know it's got a rather acquired scent, but I think it's beautiful....sorry nan.

In Mae Charim National Park, located in Nan Province Thailand. The plant Cycas Circinallis is native to southern India and Sri Lanka, but the species name was formerly widely used for similar cycads in Thailand and Southeast Asia, which leads to confusion. Attention, the seed of Cycas Circinallis is poisonous. The potent poison in the seeds is removed by soaking them in water. Water from the first seed-soaking will kill birds, goats, sheep and hogs. Water from the following soakings is said to be harmless. Minimum of 5 Soakings needed to ensure the safety. After the final soaking, the seeds are dried and ground into flour. The flour is used to make tortillas, tamales, soup and porridge.

The rightly famous Black Cuillin ridge of Skye, as seen from the nearby Marsco.
In the centre of picture is Sgurr Dearg with its shark-fin ridge, the Inaccessible Pinnacle - climbing that is the most fun you can have with your clothes on!
The craggy bulk on the left of the right of the picture with it's peak in dark shadow is Sgurr Nan Gillean, another of my very favourite mountains.
God, I love Skye!

Also know as Craggy Island parochial house. Went to see my nan in deepest darkest Ireland. Didn't take to many pictures as the only things to see within 50 miles are a cliff and some rocks and the weather was wet and grey (as it usually is). I did however make a short pilgrimage to Father ted's house which is just down the road from my nans.

According to many European old maps, the river is named as Menam or Mae Nam, the Thai word for river (Me or Mae is "Mother", Nam is "Water"). The name Chao Phraya is a Thai feudal title, which can be translated as General or Lord. In the English-language media in Thailand the name is often translated as River of Kings.
The cities along the Chao Phraya are Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chainat, Singburi, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Bangkok and Samut Prakan, listed from north to south. These cities are among the most historically significant and densely populated settlements of Thailand precisely because of their access to the waterway.
A big thank you to Mr. Wiki.. :-)
========================
Merci Mr. Wikipedia.. :-)

The bird's nest fern, also known as nest fern or Asplenium nidus, is a tropical fern species found in Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia. This fern is known for its large, glossy leaves that form a distinctive funnel shape, similar to a bird's nest. The bird's nest fern usually grows on logs, rocks or other vertical surfaces. It is an epiphytic plant, meaning it has no roots in the soil, but instead attaches itself to another plant or substrate to obtain water and nutrients. At waterfalls, the bird's nest fern can often be found on moist tree stumps and rocks where it thrives in the humid environment. The leaves of the bird's nest fern are large, feathery and bright green in color. They can reach a length of about 1 to 2 meters. The leaf surface is smooth and glossy, and the leaf margins are often slightly wavy or curled. The leaves grow in a rosette-shaped arrangement, with young leaves unfolding from the center of the rosette. The bird's nest fern is known for its graceful and ornamental appearance, and is often grown as a houseplant for its attractive foliage.
